After Hair Transplant Care in Hair Restoration Surgery

If you have recently had a hair transplant then you need to take some precautions and follow post-op instructions to achieve the best results from your hair transplant surgery. Some of the tips you need to follow after a Hair Transplant Surgery to reduce the risk of any damage and ensure a speedy recovery include:

Don’t Wash Scalp for 24 Hours

It is never a good idea to wash your hair immediately after a hair transplant surgery; in fact, doctors do not allow it for 36 to 48 hours at least post transplant. This is due to the fact that washing may damage the new follicles. Usually on the third day of the procedure the medical staff will wash your head. Even after three days ensure that shower water doesn’t directly fall on the head, instead it is advised that you use a cup to pour water on the scalp.

Your Head Should be Elevated While Sleeping

Bleeding and swelling are very common post-op side effects and keeping your head elevated can reduce the severity. Sleep by keeping 3 pillows under your head (to keep it elevated at 45 degrees at least) for the first few days after the surgery to minimize bleeding and swelling. However, do not be alarmed as these side effects are harmless and unavoidable.

Take Prescription Medication

To reduce the swelling of your scalp and kick start speedy recovery, it is advised that you start taking prescribed medication almost immediately after the hair transplant.

Avoid Blood Thinners

Avoid blood thinning medications for 2 to 3 weeks after the surgery as they not only increase the risk of bleeding but also hamper hair re-growth and wound healing.

Avoid Drinking & Smoking

Alcohol and cigarettes are poison for the growth of new hair and also discourage the healing process. It is therefore, recommended to avoid drinking and smoking for a couple of weeks before and after the hair transplant in UAE.

Avoid doing Drugs

Drugs also discourage the healing and re-growth process and in some cases doctors refuse to operate on patients with a past history of drug abuse. It is imperative that you get off drugs at least a month before the hair transplant in Dubai in order to get the best results from your hair restoration surgery.

Exposure to Sun

Sun is really bad for the new follicles, which is why it is advised that you avoid getting too much sun exposure after the surgery.  Cover your head with a cap or a hat when going out. You can also use an umbrella to avoid direct sunlight.

Avoid stressful Exercises

Avoid all exercises that cause sweating, as it can lead to infection. It is therefore recommended that you forget about running, jogging and other sports for a significant period of time after the hair transplant surgery, or until your surgeon allows you.

Never Scratch the Scalp

No matter how much it itches never scratch the scalp post-op as it can damage and dislodge the new follicles. The wounds can also get infected by your hands causing delay in the healing process and the overall outcome might not be as good as it should be.
